Desolation Sound, the Broughtons and the Inside Passage north of Vancouver.
North of the Gulf Islands the coast of British Columbia opens into fjords. Desolation Sound is the first and most visited, a knot of inlets under snow-capped mountains a day from Vancouver, with warm water in late summer and anchorages that fill on holiday weekends and empty on weekdays.
Beyond it the Broughton archipelago and the passages towards Alaska are wilder, with strong tidal rapids to time and few services. This is the coast the expedition yachts work in the months either side of their Alaska season.
